Best Time to Visit Hot Springs National Park

Are you planning a trip to the Hot Springs National Park? Also known as “The American Spa,” many of the park’s attractions, as well as activities found in its immediate surroundings, revolve around water.

So, knowing when is the right time to visit the place could help you get the most out of your trip.

When is the Best Time to Visit Hot Springs National Park, AR?

Are you looking forward to enjoying water attractions and outdoor activities?

Spring (February to April) or fall (August to October) are the best seasons to plan a trip to this beautiful destination.

The weather will remain agreeable and you can also watch migratory birds that flock to the lakes.

Why Visit in Spring?

The warmer months — which still retain the residual coldness of winter — are perfect for exploring the gorgeous Hot Springs National Park.

Temperatures range from the mid-50s to the 70s Fahrenheit, with lows hovering around 50 degrees. So, if you visit in the early spring, you’ll meet a smaller crowd.

Due to the cooler weather, spring is also a great time for hiking. Just make sure to check the weather forecast before you travel; rain is a very common occurrence in the spring season. There’s a 20% chance of precipitation on most days.

Why Visit in the Fall?

Fall starts with the warmth of the summer, beginning at the low 90s and quickly picking up the pace to around 50 degrees Fahrenheit as the weeks rush by. It transforms the parks and forests in and around the National Park into something magical. This change is evident in the flora that calls the park its home.

Instead of bright green hues, you will be greeted with shades of orange, gold, and red — it’s like watching the land change its color like a chameleon. And, the pop of color is a sight for sore eyes.

When you pair it with cool weather and sunny days, it makes camping and exploring the great outdoors so much more fun!

Your Best Bet: The Shoulder Months

If you’re looking for some quality downtime without the crowd of tourists, visit Hot Springs Natural Park in the shoulder months.

The weather may not be ideal then, but it will still be bearable because Arkansas is located in the balmy south. It’ll allow you to get some privacy as you bask in the sun — which is a good trade-off because you get to enjoy the serenity all by yourself.

But, You Can Enjoy 47 Amazingly Refreshing Thermal Springs in Summer

So shouldn’t you be visiting Hot Springs National Park during the summer?

It is a personal preference, really, but we wouldn’t recommend going in the summer. No matter how lucrative a dip in the lakes, pools, and waterfalls at Hot Springs National Park sounds. Do not think about it, especially if you’re traveling on a budget.

Summer school breaks combined with the warmer temperatures (that can reach as high as 94 degrees Fahrenheit in the peak months), make the park an excellent destination for hordes of tourists. This drives up the prices for flights and lodging, which can be a deal-breaker for some.

Friendly tip: If you’re dead set on visiting this earthly paradise in the summer months, plan the trip well in advance. Make sure to reserve the amenities and facilities you need; otherwise, you’ll have to do without — which can be a bummer.

It is also a good idea to keep ice packs with you, especially if you’re planning on hiking or camping.

However, if water activities are not the reason you’re traveling to Hot Springs National Park —

Visit During the Winters

Winters bring chillier weather — sometimes dropping below the freezing point. Due to this, the tourist turnout drops, leading to cheaper boarding rates.

Although cooler weather may not be ideal for exploring the refreshing waters, you can still enjoy the bathhouses, indoor, and outdoor swimming pools.

The same holds true for the area’s outdoor activities.

You can go for a drive or camp out to enjoy the area’s scenic beauty or take a hike to get one with nature. You can also do your Christmas shopping at the numerous boutiques, antique shops, and jewelry stores scattered in the region.

Just make sure to dress in layers, as the temperature can drop as low as 30 degrees Fahrenheit.
